Shortly after moving to Montreal, Quebec with my partner @loutellstales two years ago, we noticed a rotting, sour smell in this house whenever it rained, snow melted, or when it was humid out. The water in the house smelled even worse during these times. We were washing our hands with it, showering in it, and drinking it. It was bad enough to give me headaches, make us sick, and soon made using our home office and studio impossible. In May 2024, the power lines in our backyard exploded. Like a huge firework. It knocked out electricity to 11 other homes. The electrics in the house often stop working altogether. Even the oven. We bought industrial air scrubbers, water distillers, and protective cases for our belongings at our own expense, because for 9 months the landlord refused to send mold specialists. Even though we told him that we couldn’t use our studio, and I work from home. That we’re allergic to mold, and Lou has asthma. Lou can’t get work either when he’s constantly sick, and we can’t pay bills. It took us threatening to flee the property for him to finally send someone. They found black mold, rotting wood, and chronic damp under the floor in the basement closet. They found exposed electrical sockets near the water damage. Foundational issues that existed well before our arrival. The landlord got angry at them for the cost of the “extra work” (emergency remediation) to remove the topical mold. They told the landlord that a collapsed drain needed repairs to fix the problem. He did not let them examine the rest of the house, refused to repair the drain. After months of our ssking him to proceed with the necessary repairs, he said that he would “leave the basement as it is.” He then illegally increased the rent. We then gave the landlord notice that if he did not repair this and reduce the rent to account for the sickness, loss of studio, and work this caused- we would file with the local housing authority (the TAL) to recover damages and pay our rent to them instead in the meantime. Instead of making repairs, he immediately filed to have us evicted. He then focused on evicting us for the following 7 months. His multiple applications got processed in weeks. He’s had four hearing dates that had to be rescheduled around his vacations, or were dismissed, or that the TAL excluded us from. We have not yet been able to have a hearing for our own application, filed 7 months ago. All the evidence is uploaded to the TAL already. I’ve sent faxes, emails, made phone calls- all either refusing to help, referring me back to broken channels, or going entirely unanswered. So, just over two weeks until Christmas, While we are also dealing with medical malpractice and extremely precarious immigration deadlines, one of his applications went through. His latest application for eviction and rent reclaimation has moved forward before we even got notice of the new date in the mail. And without our original case ever being heard. Now we’ve received notice that we have 8 days to vacate the property and pay him back-rent. We can find a new place only if we have 6+ months of rent upfront, because landlords discriminate heavily against foreign freelancers and with no consequences. So we are looking at small storage units and cheap extended stay hotels in the meantime. We’re relying on donations to make it through this insane patch, and hoping one of the many, many efforts we’re making to get out of this situation resolves soon. So if nobody else is going to protect renters from this man, I’m going to do some small thing on our way out at least. I’d weld this banner to the roof if I could. Also yes, I did totally misspell “moisissurre” 😅 (I must have mold brain.) These landlords are out of control. Trapping people in rotting houses or evicting vulnerable (and now sick!!) people into a Canadian winter. We can do so much good if we can just get out of this nightmare.
